Founding Note — Why "Sun&R.Lab"

When we incorporated Sun&R.Lab in November 2023, the first thing we wrote was not a business plan. It was a single line of inquiry.

"For what reason do we weave businesses?"

A maison brand, an advisory practice for restaurants, a BizDev program for the power industry — on the surface, these three streams look like wholly unrelated work. A non-alcoholic beverage. Implementation support for Michelin-starred restaurants. Mission-critical systems for energy utilities. Was there any rational basis for housing all three under one gōdō-gaisha? We asked ourselves this question many times.

Connection — the root, not the leaf

The answer lay in the shape of the roots.

The land of Niigata holds snowmelt water and the temperature swing of four seasons; landscapes that have nurtured rice and fermentation for centuries; hands and wisdom passed down across generations. We have come to believe that this is not the property of agriculture alone — it is something that runs beneath the very form of industry and enterprise.

In the world of wine, the singular flavor born from the marriage of land, climate, and the work of human hands is called terroir. We have chosen to extend this concept across every domain of business.

In the drink we craft as a maison brand. In the restaurants we walk alongside as advisors. In the power utilities and logistics companies we accompany as a BizDev partner. In every one of these, three forces always interlace: the place, the culture, the people. Translating that interlace, and carrying it to the world — that is our work.

Three businesses are branches; terroir is the root

Once we began weaving the practice in earnest, the truth revealed itself: these are not three separate businesses, but three branches extending from a single root.

  • Maison brand (NEIGE & THÉ) — distilling the terroir of provenance and craft into a single drop
  • Non-alcoholic implementation advisory — weaving a new experience into the terroir of place held by each restaurant
  • BizDev practice — accompanying, end-to-end, the terroir of enterprise held by each industry, region, and organization

The verticals differ; the root is the same. We translate the singular value of a place, and we carry it to the world. We weave connection, and from that weaving, we generate circulation.

Why the name "Sun&R.Lab"

The "Sun" in our name is the sun itself. The "R" stands for the Riichi of Niigata — the soil, the dry land. "Lab" is the laboratory. The name carries an intention: from experiments rooted in a single place, to generate light that reaches the world. The sound is meant to be more research-quiet than commercially loud — a studio, not a storefront.

We do not hold all of the answers as settled truths. We do, however, hold one conviction —

The act of weaving connection generates the circulation of richness and happiness.

Through the form our businesses take from this point forward, we will put that hypothesis to the world.

This Journal publishes, at irregular intervals, the thinking and discoveries that emerge as we weave business into form.
