A reference set for the key terms Sun&R.Lab uses. From terroir to VPP and JEPX, we have gathered the meaning and background of the language we work in across industries.

Terroir

Terroir#: A French word used in wine and agriculture to describe the singular character that arises when land, climate, and human practice intertwine. Sun&R.Lab extends this concept into a methodology for business design, reading industries, regions, and organizations through a three-layer structure — Le Lieu (the place), La Culture (the culture), and Les Gens (the people).

Business Design

Business Terroir#: A concept original to Sun&R.Lab. We treat the three layers each industry, region, and organization carries — Le Lieu (regulation and physical conditions), La Culture (organizational culture and the receiver's culture), and Les Gens (makers, receivers, weavers) — as the design premise for any business, and create value through a "terroir-in" approach: weaving alongside the land and the people. A third path beyond market-in and product-out.
PMVVPurpose / Mission / Vision / Values#: Initials of Purpose, Mission, Vision, and Values. At Sun&R.Lab the PMVV begins with Purpose — "to bring about a world in which abundance and happiness circulate, by the power of connection" — translated into Mission as carrying that purpose to the world through terroir thinking, with Vision as the bridge between Japan and the world, and Values of Connection, Circulation, Co-creation, Curiosity, and Smile.
BizDevBusiness Development#: Business development. Sun&R.Lab's BizDev practice accompanies businesses across every phase, in four areas: industry-specific systems engineering, new business creation (zero-to-one), product build, and global expansion with PR. What sets it apart is end-to-end delivery — not only technology selection, but also dialogue with industry culture and landing the work into day-to-day operations.
Zero-to-OneZero to One#: The phase of taking a new business from "nothing" to its "first step." It calls for thinking and execution distinct from scaling an existing business — business plan formulation, financing, team formation, and first-customer acquisition. Walking alongside ventures at this stage is one of Sun&R.Lab's strengths.

Brand

Maison BrandMaison#: A brand form derived from the French Maison ("house"). More than a product brand, it carries an identity as a house that inherits a worldview, a philosophy, and a history. Sun&R.Lab's Maison brand venture, NEIGE & THÉ, is an attempt to build a Maison grounded in terroir within the non-alcoholic beverage field.
SGESearch Generative Experience#: Google's generative AI search experience (now branded as AI Overviews). It places an LLM-generated summary at the top of search results. To be cited inside SGE, a site needs structured data (Schema.org), clear declarative facts, and embedded FAQ / HowTo blocks — i.e. AIEO (AI Engine Optimization).
AIEOAI Engine Optimization#: Site design optimized for citation by AI search engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Apple Intelligence, and so on). Its three pillars are Schema.org structured data, llms.txt deployment with an AI-crawler allowlist, and declarative, citation-ready statements of fact. The Sun&R.Lab site itself serves as a working AIEO reference implementation.

Power Industry

VPP (Virtual Power Plant)Virtual Power Plant#: Short for Virtual Power Plant. A system that bundles distributed energy resources — solar generation, storage batteries, demand-side equipment — through IoT and controls them as a single power plant. It is drawing attention as a route into Japan's balancing and capacity markets. Sun&R.Lab has track record in VPP business design and operations.
JEPXJapan Electric Power Exchange#: The Japan Electric Power Exchange. The wholesale market where Japan's retail electricity providers trade power, operating Spot, Intraday, and Forward markets. Under Japan's 30-minute simultaneous-equilibrium regime, JEPX serves as the venue for reconciling planned values against actual supply and demand. Sun&R.Lab has built JEPX bidding-support systems.
Planned-Value Simultaneous EquilibriumPlanned Value Simultaneous Equilibrium#: Japan's foundational electricity-trading rule, requiring generation and demand to match in 30-minute units. The gap between planned values and actual supply-demand (the "imbalance") is settled financially, so forecasting accuracy and intra-day adjustment processes drive the economics of the business. As renewables rise on the grid, the balancing market grows in importance.
FIT / FIPFeed-in Tariff / Feed-in Premium#: Renewable-energy purchase schemes. FIT purchases output at a fixed price over the long term; FIP adds a premium on top of the market price. Securing the economics of solar plants after FIT expires — through PPA migration, self-consumption, or storage co-location — has become a defining theme for the industry.
O&MOperations & Maintenance#: Operations and Maintenance. For power plants this spans operational monitoring, periodic inspection, fault response, cleaning, and performance verification. Sun&R.Lab has launched solar-plant O&M operations and brings know-how in IoT-driven operational efficiency.
Smart City#: An urban development concept in which IoT, data, and AI integrate city infrastructure to optimize energy, transport, disaster preparedness, and citizen services. Sun&R.Lab has experience driving smart-city projects, with a particular strength in co-designing across municipalities, electric utilities, and telecommunications carriers.
Switching#: Under Japan's liberalised retail electricity regime, switching is the procedure by which a customer changes their retail electricity provider. Low-voltage and high-voltage flows differ, and contract changes are processed through OCCTO's Switching Support System. Sun&R.Lab has track record in building switching systems.

Logistics Industry

EDIElectronic Data Interchange#: Electronic Data Interchange between enterprises — order, shipping, and inventory information exchanged automatically in standard formats. EDI is supposedly ubiquitous in logistics, yet in practice fax, telephone, and spreadsheets persist alongside it; a phased digitalization design is almost always required.
